Mushroom hunting

mushroom-forayAt the AMANITA Guesthouse, we love wild mushrooms, and we would like to introduce our guests to their secrets. We lead a mushroom hunt with a gastronomic conclusion. On theme weekends focusing on mushrooms, we will introduce you to penny buns, black porcini, parasol mushrooms, and Caesar's mushrooms, as well as the inedible varieties, or "crazy mushrooms".

During these mushroom forays, we hike up the mountain Pelion and into the chestnut and beech forest to hunt around under the trees and shrubs for mushrooms so we can identify and photograph as many species as possible. We fill our baskets with the edible kinds and enjoy them back at the Guesthouse along with a glass of local wine or tsipouro (the local spirit).

Looking for edible greens, herbs, berries and nuts

spring goodiesFrom spring through autumn, Mt Pelion is full of indigenous and cultivated gastronomic treasures: tender shoots (black bryony, wild asparagus, ferns, terebinth), edible wild greens, aromatic herbs (oregano, sage), therapeutic flowers (St John's wort, elderberry), cherries, sour cherries, wild raspberries, plums, greengages, apples, pears, quince, grapes, persimmons, walnuts and chestnuts.

At the AMANITA Guesthouse, Tsagarada, we jump at the chance to teach our guests about collecting and using these tasty treasures. We make sure to gather them on our treks and walks and use them as part of our breakfast fare.

Looking for the orchids of Pelio

During the last decade, when we walk along the paths and the forest of our favorite mountain looking for mushrooms, sprouts, herbs and forest fruit, we often cross paths with orchids, the princesses of the floral kingdom.

Orchids are very diverse; sometimes they are tall and lonely, sometimes they are short and in groups, sometimes bear flowers of many colors, sometimes bear only white or green one-colored flowers, sometimes have two or three flowers, sometimes are seen with a plethora of flowers in a bush, sometimes have bright green leaves near the ground, sometimes are bare like colorful asparagus, sometimes ….

What do the orchids, the supermodels of nature, need? It’s plain and simple: they need us to notice them and take their pictures. Love comes when looking at the photos later! Orchid, just like every jealous lover, demands for exclusivity. Taking a walk to search for and take pictures of orchids: from April till July.
